If you need help selecting the right assessment tools for your course, the information below may be able to help you make that decision. THis is a shorter list based on the most common types used by our faculty.
Formative/Summative use cases. Ideal for larger classes. They can be used as quick homework/learning activities that students get a small number of points and quick feedback on their performance (after the video lecture or reading for example). This is also a great for midterms and finals. See the article on deterring cheating in online courses and importing paper-based exams.
Formative/Summative use cases. Ideal for smaller/seminar classes. Use the Assignments tool for short paper submissions. Grading is not automated and will require individual review, feedback and grading. Assignments require more attention from to TAs/Instructors. Be strategic when using assignments. One idea is to use them as milestones for a final project, that way, students can get your feedback along the way.
Formative use cases. Ideal for smaller and larger classes. Use discussions for debate over cases, student group collaboration, and Q&A. These are typically not graded though you can assign participation points.
