Importing Paper-Based Exams to eLC

Best Practices:

  • Format your exams using the Respondus formatting guide.

  • Download Respondus Exam Creator. This site will require your MyID and password.

  • After you install you may need licensing info. Please email help@terry.uga to request the code.

  • Open Respondus and set D2L Brightspace from the drop-down menu next to Current Personality.

     

  • Select the Import Questions button.

  • Set up the Import Questions box as follows:

    1. Select the file type from the Type of file drop-down menu. (For example: .doc, .docx, or .txt)

    2. Choose either to append the questions to an existing document or to create a new one. (This example is done based on creating a new document.)

      1. If you select a new document, enter a name for the quiz.

    3. Select the Preview button to make sure there are no errors in the quiz file.

    4. Once there are no errors, select the Finish button.

    5. Exams are not hidden from students by default after they are imported. Make sure you adjust Settings > Restrictions in Respondus before publishing to eLC.

 

  • Next, select the Preview and Publish tab.

  • Click on the Publish Wizard button

    • If you are publishing the test to only one course, accept the default "Publish to single course." If you are publishing the same test to multiple courses, click the radio button for Batch Publish to multiple courses.

    • If you have not yet set up a server connection to eLC, click on the  - add new server - drop-down box. If you have set up a server already, skip the next 5 steps.

    • A new box will pop up. Accept the default "Yes, check for preconfigured server settings." Click the Next button.

    • Select the server “eLearning Commons” and the Next button.

    • Enter a name for the server, use "eLC". Do not enter your credentials and run the connection test by selecting Next.

    • A pop-up window will appear. Click the OK button to close the pop-up window.

    • If you are using Respondus for the first time, or if you have just updated Respondus, you will receive a pop-up error titled Helper Tool Download. Click the OK button in this popup and Respondus will download an ad-on it needs to enable you to log in . The pop-up from the previous step will reappear. Click OK to continue.

  • A browser window with the eLC login page. Log in to eLC with your MyID and Password.

  • Close the browser window after you have logged in. Click the Close After Login button in the upper right corner of the window.

  • When the browser window closes, another pop-up window will appear. Click the OK button to close the pop-up window.

  • You will be back at the "Publish Wizard" window. Choose your eLC course(s) in which to publish.

  • If this is a new exam, accept the radio button for "Create new Exam." Give the exam a name. This is the name that will appear as the exam in eLC. 
    If you are replacing an exam, click on the radio button for "Replace existing Exam." From the drop-down list, select the exam you are replacing. 

  • Uncheck the 3 boxes at the bottom of the window under number 3 (Additional options for Exam/Survey). Click Next. 

  • Wait until "Completed successfully " appears in the status box. This may take a few minutes depending upon the length of your test. 

  • Click Finish. 

  • Open a browser window and log in to eLC to review the exam you just imported. Make the necessary changes to modify restrictions and make it available to students.
